Two British adventurers have decided to try and beat a point-to-point record which has been standing since 1983, when it was set by British Army Brigadier John Hemsley. He managed to get from Mount Nelson hotel, in Cape town, South Africa, to the Marble Arch, in London, in 14 days, 19 hours and 26 minutes. Keep in mind that the distance covered was quite substantial - 9,134 miles or 14,614 km.The two Brits, Philip Young and Paul Brace will attempt to break the record at the wheel of a near-standard Fiat Panda, fitted with the firm’s latest TwinAir powerplant. The car features minor modifications, but nothing too extensive, as it gains an extra fuel tank, sump guards and a modified air intake.Keep in mind that when John Hemsley set the record, he was driving a factory-prepared Range Rover, so it looks as if the odds are stacked against the two Brits, who will have to cover at least 1,000 miles per day if they want to stand a chance at snagging the record.

The event has attracted interest from numerous entrants and manufacturers since.
