Alfa Romeo 164 ProCar without cover

After the takeover of Alfa Romeo by the Fiat Group, it was agreed that Alfa still was responisble for the touring car sports. As it was clear that there was no real chance in the '97 touring car world championship Fiat's headquarter ordered the complete withdraw from motorsports. Alfa Corse, the former motorsports department Auto Delta, now only concentrated on the new ProCar Series proclaimed by the FIA.

 
10 Cylinder Formel 1 Engine

The ProCar Series was a child of the FOCA boss Bernie Ecclestone, who in the past used Alfa Romeo race engines in his Brabham-F1 cars and therefore had best of contacts to Alfa Romeo. These ProCars were to be bulit in the new group "S" (S = silhouette) and come as touring cars with F1- technology With this new series Bernie Ecclestone wanted to attract many of the major car  manufacturers, mostly to get new engine manufacturers for the Formula 1. According to the at this time valid FIA-requirements the engines had to have the same technical specs as the Formula 1 engines. This also applied to the rest of the Formula 1 technology, monocoque frames, carbon fibre brake discs, and a centrally located engine with a maximum displacement of 3,5 liters. All this was the "state of the art" of the Formula 1.


The Chassis Elements

The body had to look like the original stock car, this meant that no aerodynamic devices were allowed. Except a huge rear wing, placed on the trunk lid. Alfa now tried to get a team together for this new Formula "S". This is how - with the help of Brabham (at this time owned by Bernie Eccleston) - the unique 164 ProCar was born. It's a pity that all other manufacturers showed no interest in the new series so that not a single race was driven as there were no cars built to these specs, of course there was no ProCar chamoipnship at all. So the only car which was built is this wonderful 164 ProCar.  We'd like to take the opportunity to tell you more about this almost unknown Alfa. The "silhouette" is the original 164 silhouette. As already mentioned above the only aerodynamic help ist the huge rear spoiler on the trunk lid.


Complete mounted 164 ProCar

The chassis is made from an aluminum-Nomex-honeycomb monocoque reinforced with Kevlar and carbon fibre. The bodywork is also made from Nomex, Kevlar and carbon fibre. The body work is made (and consits) of 3 parts. The front end which includes the engine hood and fenders is made from one piece just as the rear end which is made up to the roof, "B" panels, rear doors and rear fenders. Both parts can be disassembled or fitted with the usual quick- or cam-locks which are used in the motorsports world. The rest of the bodywork, including doors, windshield, "A"-panels make up the middle part of this work of art. The doors have same size and also function like the stock ones, they are just built from lighter material. Even the rear view mirrors, headlamps and bumpers have same size and look like the stock ones, but you can see how one can be fooled thinking that your 164 can go just as fast.


The elements of the 164 ProCar

The whole brake system is same as used in F1 with it's multi piston monoblock calipers  and the carbon fibre discs. The engine was built to latest F1-specs, it's a 73° V-10 with 4 overhead camshafts and 4-valve technology. The engine was placed in the center of the car and bolted together with a 6 speed transmission (plus reverse gear). The digital ingnition/fuel injection system was built by Bosch. The engine produces over 600 BHP and with 750 kg (1655 lbs) curb weight it reaches a top speed of 350 kph (217 mph) and does the 0 - 100 kph in around 2 seconds (!!!). Now just look at the stock 164 for comparison, with it's 3.0 liter engine, it's SOHC and 192 BHP reaching 230 kph (142 mph) and 0 - 100 kph in 7,5 secs. Any more questions?


View on the Engine

Everything on the 164 ProCar was built to F1 specs. Also the price, which was around 350.000 US$ for the car and it's developement. Just think, that was 1987 and this was the hell lot of money !! The top-speed was due to the better aerodynamics even higher than the one of the actual F1 car. Only the wheel size of the F1  couldn't be reached due to the limited space, but the used 17' rims with Michelin slicks looked fine too. Almost like the US funny cars you sure know from the US drag racing scene. Well, Alfa Romeo's motorsports departement Alfa Corse with help of Brabham F1 managed to produce a race car according to the FIA-requirements in very short time.



Unfortunately no other manufacturer was willing to take the risk and of course the costs to build such a car and therefore the ProCar Series died before it was even born. Alfa Romeo had to wait till the DTM/ITC series started,  to finally compete in a touring car champinship with F1 level and enough serious competitors. But that's another story. According our information the 164 ProCar now is somewhere in the US, where Don Black took some of these pics.

Este carro já não existe, tenho aqui fotos num dvd algures que mostra a desmontagem dele. O carro era baseado no chassis do 164 Q4 e não no normal, e o prototipo que fez os testes tinha um V6...pelo que diz no dvd o V10 nunca foi usado no carro devido a ser cancelado antes do motor estár concluido.

o dvd para quem quiser procurar é "Alfa and it's racing heritage", tambem tenho outro da lancia e só me falta um da fiat porque ainda não o encontrei

Este chassis não tem nada a ver com o do Q4...





O chassis foi feito á medida para suportar o bixo.


A carroçaria é que é de um 164.

E não me parece a de um Q4.

A do procar não me parece ter aquelas saias e acrescentos no parachoques. ( talvez o da frente apenas )

Nem nos catalogos da ALFA ROMEO o 164 QV ou Q4 aparece sem esse aspecto...


Penso que não estás a confundir com o 164 3.0 V6...

Provavelmente venderam-te-o sem os apendices estecticos.


Como te disse nem nos catalogos da ALFA ROMEO eu vi o 164 Q4 sem eles...
