Presented in 1993, the Punto was awarded "Car of the Year" in 1995. Available in 14 colours and 31 versions, including a GT and Cabrio. Two or four doors, three equipment levels and the latest generation Fire engines, including the options of a 5 speed gearbox and electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission system.
The Punto under the GT badge will make you think quite hard with its very good balance of kg's/HP and its dimensions. Add the fact that its 136 horses are a 1400cc only case, and you can realize now why even in its sight only, one gets a heart attack! On the road, you survive having fun, without getting yourself in trouble, as long as you are using much of the brains you have in your head! Then, you can take advantage of the marvellous torque of its motor, the very easy to use shifter and the quite good steering system, which in cooperation with the suspension offer the much needed suppleness. The brakes are beyond any criticism, while the red "test mule" we had in hand, verifies pretty well that the updated quality of the recent Fiat cars is reality, rather, than theory.in Motor City, 1997
The supremely elegant and distinctive new Fiat Punto is a great reminder of Fiat's unending obsession with true originality and incomparable style. Choose from either the dynamic and sporty looking 3-door version or the stylish and elegant 5-door. This small hatchback is truly a class leader boasting unmistakable Italian styling. The new Punto has revolutionised the small car sector. Since being launched, it has set new standards for its segment. The sporty 3 door boasts contemporary dynamic styling, both at the front and rear of the car providing a striking exterior profile. The 5 door is stylish and elegant and conveys a strong sense of space and compactness. Its small size makes the Punto extremely manoeuvrable but it still has room inside for five adults with the most comfort in its class: a large luggage space, along with abundant storage compartments, pockets and oddment holders that utilise space to the full. Its wide, varied range can satisfy any need: a 3 or 5 door hatchback in 7 versions (Active, Active Sport, Dynamic, Eleganza, Sporting, HGT and Abarth) with 5 different engines that run from the 1.2 8v all the way to the new 85hp 1.9 JTD direct injection turbo diesel. Equipped with a complete range of standard features, which include: Fiat's innovative Dualdrive electronic power-steering with the "City" function button to shift from motorway driving to manoeuvring in heavy traffic and parking, driver's airbag and engine immobiliser. The suspension increases driving pleasure by giving a feel for the road but not the bumps providing a smooth even ride. Along with the 5 speed and 6 speed manual gearboxes (the latter available on the Punto Sporting version), there is also the Speedgear automatic transmission, adapted from Formula 1 racing technology, with the option of sequential operation and a choice of 6 or 7 speeds.
Ideal for the city, this engine is great especially in stop and go traffic and returns a combined city/motorway fuel consumption figure of 49.6 mpg.
Offers refined technology along with executive features such as twin overhead cam timing and an electronic "drive-by-wire" accelerator. This engine is also available on a Sporting version providing guide acceleration and a 6 speed gear box.
Fiat Punto SpeedGearSuperminis are practical small cars, and account for the biggest proportion of car sales. They mainly sell with manual transmission, but clutchless and automatic versions are popular with city-dwellers and drivers who cannot use a clutch pedal. The Punto Speedgear is an automatic supermini with a difference - it's actually entertaining and sporty. The Speedgear system is comprised of a dual-mode CVT (continuously variable transmission), plus a six- or seven-gear manual sequential shift. It is available with six gears on the Punto 1.2 16V ELX five-door, and with seven on the Punto 1.2 16V Sporting. It's a very clever gearbox, and makes the Punto Speedgear even more rewarding to drive than its manual equivalents.
The most powerful, assertive and sporty version of the range, with variable valve timing and exceptional performance.

The pleasure of driving a Punto with an eye on fuel consumption. Indirect injection with an electronic pump makes for a quiet, efficient and well balanced diesel.
A diesel powerplant, turbocharged with the revolutionary Unijet, Common Rail direct injection for the kind of power and response formerly only available from petrol engines with economical fuel consumption.
Punto Rally homologationFiat has homologated also Fiat Punto Rally for rally races for K/10 category, so that it can run for Super1600 and Junior Rally Championship. The round badge, heir to a golden sporting past, returns to do battle on the field. The crown of laurels - perennially the symbol of victory - is sported by a Fiat Punto version prepared and sold by Fiat Auto Racing. The car is called the Fiat Punto Rally and it is produced for customers who wish to race in the 1600 Group A kit category. The model comes with factory-fitted safety devices and is practically ready to drive out onto the track. All the preparation workshop has to do is adjust the ride set-up. This system allows Fiat to offer a competitive car yet keep costs down. The decision to outfit bodies directly in the factory allows us to save time and manpower when taking out all the parts we are allowed to remove: seats, trim etc. The car is derived from the Punto HGT version (130 bhp), which has been specially revised to meet FIA rules. The designers made the styling look more aggressive while still maintaining all the individuality of the standard production model. The dimensions have changed: compared to the HGT, the Fiat Punto Rally is 122 mm wider and 40 mm lower but the same length. The wings, bumpers and upper spoiler are made of composite. When creating the Fiat Punto Rally, we took the sporty HGT version and then made all the changes needed to turn it into a rally car. The engineers at Chivasso were helped in their task by being able to draw on the wealth of experience built up by Fiat Auto Racing in competitions. The main changes are as follows: engine capacity is reduced to 1579 cc (the Punto HGT is fitted with a 1.8 16v). This was achieved by altering stroke through the addition of a new, lighter camshaft. New racing pistons and connecting rods have also been added. The flywheel is also lighter, the exhaust manifold is new and the intake manifold is single-intake type. The power unit develops a mighty 215 bhp at 9000 rpm. The integrated ignition and injection system is made by Magneti Marelli. The transmission consists of a single-plate, metal-ceramic clutch, a 6-speed gearbox (plus reverse) with front engagement and sequential control, and a self-locking, segmented differential. The suspension is also new and developed to fit the wider body. It comes in two versions: one for asphalt and the other for unsurfaced roads. A light alloy strut at the front is combined with dual-setting hydraulic-pneumatic dampers. The rear end is fitted with an advanced version of the standard production torsion beam with springs co-axial with the dampers. All joints are Uniball type. The two versions designed for asphalt and unsurfaced roads differ in the type of spring and damper used and also their ground clearances. The light alloy wheels measure 7 x 17 (asphalt) and 6 x 16 (unsurfaced roads). The braking system comes with a double pump. The Brembo callipers and discs fitted at the front differ according to road surface type. The rear is fitted with standard production discs and Brembo callipers. The system also features front and rear load proportioning valves on the pedals, a regulator controlled by the driver and a hydraulic handbrake.
